Day Fifteen - Weather

It’s the first rainstorm of the season, our first bought of bad weather. And with that, out comes the pots, pans, and bowls to catch the drips coming down from the ceiling.

Teddy comes out of his bedroom in the morning, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. When he catches me putting a pot down in the hallway to catch another drip, he is immediately awake.

“What is going on?” He asks and quickly walks over to me to look up at the spot in the ceiling.

“It’s just what I do when it rains this heavily, I get out the pots and pans.” I say with a shrug.

It’s all true, and it’s what my aunt taught me too. If the roof leaks, just put a pot under it and it’ll all be fine.

“Oh, I don’t think that’s what you should need to be doing.” Teddy says and continues to walk around the hallway looking up at the ceiling. “It should be fixable…”

William comes out into the hallway and at noticing the pot I had put down, he shakes his head.

“There’s a leak in my room too,” he says, looking straight at Teddy. He seems to have forgotten that he can’t hear him so he turns to me. “Could you please tell him?”

“Your friend is here, he says that there’s a leak in his room too.”

Teddy nods, “How many others are there?”

William quickly disappears and comes back.

“Sixteen.” He says and I repeat it back to Teddy.

They continue to look together for all of the leaks. Somehow with the bit of commotion they’ve caused, now everyone is left standing out in the upstairs hallway this morning.

Teddy comes back in with William, “Well, it should all be fixable, but we’ll have to wait until the run stops.”

William agrees with him, “You really shouldn’t have just left these drips. We might have to replace the whole roof at this point.”

Mary steps in beside me, “Well, nothing we can do about it today. And what are we going to do if we’re stuck inside?”

“How about we take a look in the closet to see if there’s something new you can learn about, Mary? Maybe there’s a board game in the closet?” I ask her.

Calvin excitedly pumps his fist and rushes downstairs saying he has just the game for us to play.

We all putter downstairs and into the sitting room. Teddy and William have since cleaned up the mess from yesterday and  have some of the walls covered in sheets. Presumably so I don’t see them.

Teddy goes over to the fireplace and throws a couple of logs into it. He gets to work preparing a fire.

“Teddy, I’m not sure if that fireplace works anymore.” I say to him.

“Don’t worry, I’ve fixed it. This will be the first fire of the season.” He says with a grin and lights up the kindling.

Before I know it, the room is alit with the warm glow of a fire.

Calvin has a couple of board games boxes with him, but he’s already got a copy of Monopoly set up on the floor, and he’s explaining the rules of the game to Mary.

Mrs Thompson comes into the room carrying a tray of tea and coffee for me and Teddy, along with some scones that were left over. We all sit down surrounding the board. Teddy wraps a blanket around my shoulders.

The rest of our morning is spent in the coziness of the living room, enjoying each others’ company while the rain continues to come down.
