Day Twenty Nine - Float

Everyone in the house is doing their part to bring Teddy’s vision of Halloween to life.

I watch as Calvin and Teddy float up together to string lights on the edges of the roof. Stings of orange and purple. Teddy directs them from the ground.

Mary and Mrs Thompson are painting some wooden photo stand-ins. Each of them has at least one hole so that people could stick their heads inside and take photos with them. Mrs Thompson insisted she didn’t have the skill to paint, but she’s doing a good job. So far they’ve got a pair of werewolves and a single vampire, and next they’ll be working on a group of ghosts. Ghosts that have white sheets draped over them.

I’m busying myself by setting up a straw stuffed scarecrow that’s sitting on a bench. I draw a big smiley face onto him. I’d for it to stare anyone in the dark, if there is anyone to be scared.

And after this, there’s still more to do. There are decorations Teddy wants to put up inside, and we still have more lights to put about so that the whole place is lit up at night. There’s a bag of cotton fluff waiting to be strung up as spiderwebs.

It’s been a lot of work, but at the same time, everyone has been having fun all day long.

---

When we’re all done, it’s the late afternoon. We all take a step back to admire our handywork. Somehow, the pumpkins we carved all look grander in their new setting. It finally looks like Halloween, it’s just a shame no one else will see it.

I glance over to Teddy and his eyes are wide. I can see the lights reflecting in them. Looking at him and seeing how happy he is makes me feel like I could float on air.

I squeeze his hand and he squeezes mine back.

Even if no one sees it, him being happy is enough reason to do all of this.
