Day Twenty Two - Tunnel

A tunnel of white sheet cloth has appeared in the entrance to the sitting room. And it seems that everyone in the house has disappeared into the room for the day. I’ve been told I’m not allowed to enter the tunnel, at least not until I’m told.

Teddy has told me that they are close to completing what they’ve been doing in the room. And everyone has eagerly offered to pitch in. I get the sense that they all know what’s been happening and I’ve been left in the dark.

I’ve been trying to keep myself busy, but it’s hard to ignore all the hustle and bustle going on. I can only imagine what Teddy must be seeing happening in the room. All sorts of tools and objects flying around him, and while I hear the chatter from the ghosts, all he must hear is the noise of the tools. Though I don’t think he minds it if he’s putting that much focus into it.

All sorts of boxes have been coming into the house and going straight into the sitting room. Some look heavy, some look light. Calvin insisted I look away at some point, but I could tell that him and Billy were moving a large piece of furniture into the room.

I’m left alone today with Lavender. I’m trying to keep my focus on the book I’m reading about a quaint coffee shop, but I’m constantly distracted by all the noise. It’s sweet how everyone is helping Teddy and Billy out today, but I can’t help feeling a bit lonely by myself.

So, I move myself out to the porch, book in hand. It’s a bit quieter outside, and while it’s a bit chilly out, it’s nice to be wrapped in a blanket. Lavender chooses to come outside to curl up in my lap.

I’m in the middle of reading a paragraph when I hear our front gate creak open. And I look to see Gale and Beth walking up the path with a small group of people behind them. All with paint cans, ladders, and tools in their hands.

I stand up from my chair and Lavender jumps out of my lap.

“What are you all doing here?” I ask as they get closer.

“We’re here to help!” Gale says with a smile on her face.

The door opens behind me, and Teddy comes out, raising his arms in a greeting to them.

“You came!” he says, and trots down the front steps to meet them. “I’ve got a full list of tasks for us to get done today. If that’s okay with you all?”

Everyone nods and I’m left baffled at seeing everyone here.

“Are you all aware of what goes on here?” I ask to the small crowd.

I know that most people in town don’t dare come near the house for fear of all the ghosts and what they might see.

Gale waves her hand in front of her face, like it’s no big deal. “Teddy tells us all about the ghosts, it sounds like they’re harmless. And after everything he’s told us about you, this sounds like a worthwhile project to help with. We should consider each other neighbours after all.” Gale winks at me.

I don’t know what to say, so I nod. Beth dashes up the front steps to me and grabs onto my arm.

“Let’s go into the kitchen, I’ll make us lunch and keep you busy while everyone gets to work.” Beth says with an inviting smile. I have heard that she’s an amazing cook.

Still baffled by what is going on, I nod again and let Beth take me inside the house. I turn around to look at Teddy who smiles widely at me and waves.

I have to trust that he has plan for everything.
